We’re going back to movies for this list, but we’re still staying in the past for a while longer. We were thinking of doing decades themed lists of best movies, but we’ve changed our mind. We won’t be going into each decade specifically, but we will focus on our favourite one. It’s the one, the only, the inimitable 80s!
BACK TO THE FUTURE
Our jump into the past begins with a movie from the past about going further into the past and then going back to the future, which for us is still the past. Confused? Great. What kind of movie about time travel would this be, if you weren’t?
THE BREAKFAST CLUB
The 80s were a time of stereotypes, which are basically true as well. And to get you through the basics, we recommend The Breakfast Club, a pleasant story about a group of very different teenagers, who are completely different from today’s youth. But some things stay the same nonetheless.
THE KARATE KID
The master and the student. A favourite topic of the 80s. Old and wise mentors like Yoda, Splinter and of course Mr. Miyagi teach young and brave characters about how to become the best version of themselves. A movie that made the whole Ljubljana take karate lessons.
THE NEVERENDING STORY
Before we knew the advanced CGI technology we have today and before there was the terrible CGI technology of the 90s … the movie creators had to get creative. With models, playdoh, puppets and 100 other ways that gave the 80s fantasy movies a uniquely bizarre and inimitable look. And this movie makes the bizarre shine in full light.
The 80s were also a period of testosterone. Guns, muscles and one-liners. Oh yeah! But Die Hard isn’t one of the stupid action movies from that era. And believe us, there were many. Plenty of people honestly believe this is one of the best written action movies of all time.
Where there’s Die Hard, there’s also Lethal Weapon … two partners who can’t stand each other, but in the end can’t cope without one another? A cliche today, but a cult classic then. The movie series got so many sequels, even we have gotten “too old for this shit.”
THE BEVERLY HILLS COP
Tam-tam, tam-taram-tam-tam … are you whistling the tune in your head yet? And please, no awful Crazy Frog remixes. There’s only one original. The legendary Eddie Murphy and his contagious laughter.
Tom Cruise has probably sold more Ray Ban glasses than any ad in the last 30 years. If we would make a list of everything that’s “cool” and try to fit it all into one movie – Top Gun would be it!
Guys didn’t only measure the size of their guns and bazookas. There’s also money, of course! The 80s knew how to celebrate greed, degeneracy and excess as well. And it all lived on Wall Street!
Enough testosterone! Our list ends with an excellent movie with a female lead. Flashdance is such an ultimately feel good movie, it might even be our favourite on this list and it absolutely exemplifies the 80s vibe – what a feeeeeeling!
That’s it. Our nostalgia period is over and now we’re really heading back to the future. So get ready for next time, when we’ll give you the best new series!
